Makes 4-5 dozen
Ingredients
5 cups flour
1/2 cup sugar
3 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1 cup shortening
1 pkg dry yeast (2 1/4 tsp)
2 tbsp warm water
2 cups buttermilk*
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400°F. Sift together dry ingredients. Stir in shortening. Dissolve yeast in water. Add with buttermilk to flour mixture and mix well. Turn out onto floured surface. Roll about 1/4″ thick. Cut. Bake for 15 minutes.
*For dairy-free alternative, substitute 2 cups coconut milk and 1 tbsp lemon juice or white vinegar. Stir and let stand 5 minutes before using.
